Mulberry Lodge — Interior Design in Hale
A considered Victorian home renovation combining period character, bespoke craftsmanship and modern family living.
Mulberry Lodge is a distinguished Victorian manor house in Hale, Greater Manchester. Working across two phases, Ingrid transformed the entrance hall, hallways and staircase before continuing into the utility room, playroom and home study.
The design balances the architectural character of the original property with the practical requirements of family life, bringing together thoughtful lighting, bespoke cabinetry and carefully selected materials.
A Brighter, More Welcoming Entrancee
The entrance hall had elegant proportions but limited natural light and a long, relatively narrow layout.
Light finishes, a redesigned lighting scheme and large-format porcelain flooring inspired by antique limestone created a brighter arrival. Wall panelling, tall Victorian skirting boards and substantial cornices reinforce the property’s period character.
Handcrafted bronze wall lights, carefully selected artwork and a statement chandelier bring warmth and individuality to the space.
Bespoke Staircase Lighting
Preserving the original stained-glass skylight meant the staircase chandelier could not be suspended conventionally.
Instead, a bespoke installation was designed for the back wall, with handcrafted glass buds and bronze detailing arranged in an organic, sweeping composition.
Lightly foxed antique mirror panelling adds depth and reflects the lighting. Made using traditional techniques, the mirror complements the Victorian architecture while introducing a distinctive sense of luxury.
Bespoke Utility & Boot Room
The former utility room and bathroom were combined into one light, multifunctional space.
Cabinetry made and installed by local artisans provides dedicated storage for coats, shoes, laundry and household essentials. Considered layouts and brushed brass details create a practical room that feels connected to the rest of the home.
An Atmospheric Home Study
The study takes a richer approach, with dark-stained oak cabinetry, a bespoke desk and personal artwork.
Deep-buttoned armchairs, leather-upholstered tables and brass detailing create a comfortable setting for work and quiet relaxation.
A Calm & Playful Children’s Room
A neutral palette, natural materials and generous bespoke storage create a welcoming playroom.
Large oak handles and deep drawers make the cabinetry easy for children to use. Oversized armchairs provide a comfortable reading space, while animal-shaped chairs introduce a playful touch.
A Home Designed Around Its Owners
Ingrid brought together welcoming entrance spaces, a comfortable study and practical family rooms, giving each its own character while maintaining continuity throughout.
The result respects the home’s Victorian architecture and supports everyday life through thoughtful layouts, craftsmanship and personal details.
Behind the Transformation
The renovation combined decorative changes with practical improvements. The first phase addressed the entrance spaces and staircase, particularly the challenge of limited daylight.
The second phase remodelled the family rooms and included upgrades to heating, cooling and electrical systems. Bespoke storage and carefully coordinated finishes brought these hardworking spaces into the overall design.
