The interior design of this Grade II-listed property in Wilmslow centred on creating a sensitive balance between historic character and contemporary living.
Dating from 1848, CARTER MANOR provided an elegant architectural setting for a minimalist open-plan kitchen and dining space. Clean lines, a pure-white palette and subtle Scandinavian influences create a confident contrast with the original features while allowing the heritage of the Cheshire property to remain central to the design.
A Contemporary Kitchen for a Listed Building
Rather than imitating the past, we introduced a clearly contemporary kitchen that sits respectfully within the historic interior.
A goalpost-style surround frames the bank of tall units, allowing the cabinetry to sit neatly flush. At the centre of the room, a generous kitchen island provides the main preparation and entertaining space. Its waterfall worktop, induction hob and centrally positioned oven tower create a strong yet beautifully balanced composition.
As passionate cooks, the owners wanted clearly defined kitchen and dining areas that would make everyday life and sociable entertaining effortless. The open-plan layout maintains a natural connection between cooking, dining and conversation while providing comfortable circulation throughout the room.
Refined and Practical Materials
Calacatta quartz was selected for the island and dedicated coffee station. Its expressive veining captures the natural beauty of marble while offering the durability and practicality required in a hardworking kitchen.
Italian wood-effect porcelain tiles were laid in a classic herringbone pattern. Their matt finish introduces warmth, texture and depth while remaining easy to maintain. Underfloor heating provides discreet comfort without interrupting the clean architectural lines of the space.
Lighting the Original Architecture
A carefully considered architectural lighting scheme brings the historic and contemporary elements together.
Layered task, ambient and accent lighting supports the practical needs of the kitchen while gently highlighting original details, including the property’s distinctive windows. The lighting allows the room to feel bright and functional during the day before becoming warm and atmospheric in the evening.
